The Choir offers free musical training, enjoyment of music-making with others, development of alertness and self-confidence, the opportunity to make good friends and a little extra pocket money. Choir members also have the opportunity to attend singing-days and 3-day courses at Buckfast Abbey and at Exeter Cathedral run by the Royal School of Church Music.
The Choir sings a very large repertoire of church music, ranging from medieval plainsong through Byrd and Palestrina to modern pieces by Benjamin Britten, Herbert Howells and John Rutter. From time to time we are invited to sing Evensong at Exeter Cathedral.
Our choirmaster, Tony Yates, has been a member of the BBC Northern Singers and of Canterbury and Chichester Cathedral Choirs and a visiting teacher of singing at Dartington College of Arts. He has been organist & choirmaster at St Margaret’s since 1973. He is also assistant conductor of the Exeter Philharmonic Choir and is the director of “Exeter Singers”.
The Church has a very fine 3-manual Nicholson organ, installed in 2009 (pdf of more information). We have an excellent grand piano in the church and a practice room with piano. There are full choir robes, and we have one of the largest parish choir music libraries in the country.
Please come and see if our church choir is for you: friendly reception guaranteed! We rehearse in the Church Room on Fridays from 7 to 8.15 p.m., and before the service on Sundays from 9.30 a.m.
For more information, please contact the organist and choirmaster: Tony Yates, 6 Parkfield Way, Topsham. Tel. 875276.
